Soot vs Cinder

Black Rock City · 2026
In the shadows of a forgotten future, two rival tribes converge, turning a high-stakes mission for a legendary light into a breathtaking display of synchronized grace.

Synopsis

The stage is set in the Soot & Cinder Colosseum, a space that feels like a forgotten outpost of the future. The silence is broken by the arrival of the Soots—a crew defined by grit and geometric precision.

Moving in tight, protective triangles, the Soots scan the perimeter with their fire held close, treating props as tools for navigation and defense. From the opposite side, the Cinders emerge—a sentient, fluid collective that moves in haunting unison. For them, movement is language: long staffs and rope darts trace wide, sweeping paths as they seek the same prize.

At the center of this convergence lies The Ember Core, an object of rare importance. Neither crew is here to fight; they are here to fulfill a mission. The tension is palpable as they size up the challenge—and each other. The Cinders reveal their collective strength through a towering “spell-cast” lift, while the Soots hold a vigilant, low-profile perimeter.

The atmosphere shifts from observation to action during The Scramble. As if triggered by a silent signal, both crews surge toward the Core—an intersection of movement with millisecond timing, a “Capture the Candle” race where bodies weave through one another without striking.

The goal is to reach the light first. The frenzy culminates when a Cinder successfully activates the Core with a powerful breath of fire, erupting it into a brilliant burst of flame.

Overwhelmed by the raw energy of the newly awakened source, the dancers retreat to the shadows to reset. In a moment of collective realization, the crews unite for The Harvest—working together to strip the Core of its glowing “sparks,” smaller wands each dancer carries downstage.

They form a brilliant wall of fire: a ceremonial “mask” that hides the Core’s final transformation. As the line peels away, industrial urgency dissolves into a whimsical celebration.

Two dancers are revealed at center, performing a spirited, spinning duet atop a rotating plate, fueled by the very energy they sought. The remaining tribe members spread into a wide box formation, original props refueled and burning bright. No longer two separate crews, they end in a synchronized “final burn”— a shared victory for the Soot and Cinder tribes alike.

A Call to the Flame.

The Soot & Cinder collective is a nine-person team. We are currently seeking two final performers to complete our seven-person dance troupe.

To keep our tribe self-sustaining, performers are encouraged to take on a dual role within our Production Team—assisting with Safety, Sound, Props, or Wardrobe. Whether you move within the fire or manage the craft beside it, we invite you to find your place.
